Chapter 9

Traffic snarled as he started towards the law firm location Jake gave him. He parked on the side and while waiting for Jake to come out, he texted Abe to apologize that he and Jake couldn’t make it. Kylie had called earlier in the day to find out if they could get together before they headed out west. He loved his brother; there wasn’t anything he would rather do but patch things up. They obviously were going to disagree with Abe and Kylie’s new venture, but it wasn’t worth it for them to have a strained relationship about it.

But tonight was important. He wanted to make sure that Jake wasn’t being sucked into some criminal enterprise.

Jake texted him. Headed down. See you in a few.

He didn’t normally text emoticons but he sent a smiley face only to be followed with a question mark from Jake. He looked at his cell phone again but saw no text response from Abe. He looked to his right. Behind him, a black Mustang that remained parked was the entrance to the building. Jake exited, wearing his long coat and suit clothes. A dark-haired woman stood next to him and Jake crossed the street with her. Xavier watched as Jake said goodbye to her then headed to where Xavier sat. He unlocked the door and Jake opened the passenger side door.

“Uh-uh, you need to go in the back seat.”

“What? What for?”

“Brought your change of clothes. Black T-shirt and jeans. You can’t wear a suit or even a tie to the Lavender Dungeon.”

“Okay.” Jake entered the backseat and slid inside. “Classy. My clothes are in a paper bag.”

“You’re welcome! How was work?”

“Awesome. Reviewed the file again, watch an overview on contracts, torts and criminal law for federal. One of the senior associates talked about the local rules. All in all, a very exciting day,” Jake added dryly. “How was yours? How was work?”

“Actually, after you left, I stayed in. Had a little of the stomach bug.”

Jake paused before he commented. “We shouldn’t go then to Rockville. Let’s go home.” Jake proceeded to take off his shoes, then his shirt. He put on the black T-shirt.

“No, I’m fine. Where’s your intellectual curiosity? You’ve been to murder scenes and everything, what’s there to worry about with this club?”

“Those were work related. Here, we’re talking about a subculture I’m not familiar with.”

“Hmmm. Is that a play on words?”

“What are you talking about?”

“Sub—culture?”

“Ha. I should take credit but I didn’t even think about it.” Jake slid off his belt, then his slacks then laid on the back seat as he slipped on the jeans.

Xavier eyed Jake in the rearview mirror. He noticed the black car that had been parked earlier had also left its spot and was behind them. Xavier figured out with traffic that they would hit Rockville in forty-five minutes, after taking the Whitehurst Freeway, hoping to time it right to Francis Scott Key Bridge.

“Who was that woman you were with?”

“Vanessa. Luke Samuel’s assistant. She seems nice. I thought she was a little abrupt when I first met her but I think she likes me.
